Question on Running for time instead of distance.

Postby Sue on Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:31 pm

In preparation for the HAT run, I am focusing on lots and lots of trail runs.
For my long runs I have been running from home to Calvert Cliffs, then running multiple loops around various different trails. Since the parks mileage signs are not accurate I have no way to know exactly how many miles I cover in there, so I'm kind of estimating based on the time. As I understand most people slow down on trails, ok so my question is: Are there any broad or rough guidelines as to how I could calculate to ensure I am covering the distance? For example if I have an 18 miler up, and I know from past runs on the road of 18ish miles that it takes me xx:xx time to cover, should I add time to the trail run? If so about how much time should you add? Sorry this is so long and I hope it's not too confusing. (fyi: I have almost always measured distances with the car for previous long runs so I could be pretty certain I was covering the required distance.) Any advice is appreciated, Thanks! :D

I slow down a lot on trails and could probably add 30 secs to a minute per mile compared to roads. Don't know anything about training for that wacky trail race you're doing. ;)

One tidbit on distance at Calvert Cliffs - according to Perry's GPS, it's 5.1 miles if you take the service road one way and the orange trail the other way. Let's try to get some more GPS geeks out there to measure the rest of the trails for us. ;) Yesterday I decided that next time I run there, I want to take the orange trail down and the red back. Do you know how long the red trail really is? I forgot already what the sign there says.

According to the signs the Red trail is 1.8 miles from the parking lot to the beach. Tomorrow I plan on running the entire Orange trail (from the hunter's parking lot) to the beach, back via the Red, up the Blue, then around to the White, back down the Service Rd. to the beach and back, maybe throw in another loop somewhere.
I agree we need someone with a measuring device to come out and measure all the trails. Of course I hear those devices sometimes are not as accurate either due to thick tree cover or hills, but it would probably be better than what's posted. :D

When are you planning to run tomorrow? If it's not too crazy early, can I crash your party and meet you at the park? Do you know what time the gate opens? Guess I could always park at Cove Point and run that short stretch of road up to the park if the gate is closed. I was planning to do up to 8 miles somewhere, sometime tomorrow, doing the trails would be fun. As I hijack your forum thread.......

Oh, if you get the eebeey jeebies about posting plans on here when you may be alone (as I sometimes do) give me a call, email, or private message. I'll be in and out all day, will check email / forum again by 8 tonight.

I don't think they lock the gates anymore. I have gone by there early (like: still kind of dark early) and it's been open. I'll send you a PM. :)

Yes, a great run... I gauge such by how hungry I am now and have been since I got home altho I've eaten twice already. You know, if we had really coordinated our efforts, we could all be having quite the surf & turf feast today. Steak & Cheese, shrimp, and king crab legs. 8)

You should try running in Wildwood, the "LANDSHARKs" lose teeth all of the time

Sure, make me feel bad for complaining about how hungry I was when I ran less than half your total distance yesterday. Hope you had a relaxing afternoon with lot of tasty recovery snacks. :)

Oops, I wasn't trying to make you feel bad...You're great Amy, what would I have done without you to get that cliff bar open? and I appreciate the extra H2O. The afternoon was long and not very relaxing...with football  . But I'm glad the EAGLES won (for my husband). I ate like I had run a marathon or something though. I admit I had lots of snacks in-between meals and plenty of sweets. I'm feeling it in my quads and calves today that's for sure.

I think that if you do half the distance on your hands, then you won't notice your quads and calves as much the next day...
