| Even though there is probably no way they will see this, I just wanted to say thank you to the couple walking Monday night in Drum Point. They stopped me during my run to warn me about loose dogs (3) in a yard I was going to pass. Did I mention it was dark out so it would have been very hard to see them? Having been bit during a training run (13 miles in and a mile from home) almost two years ago, I appreciated the heads up. Anyone who has spent any time running outside will probably have their fair share of dog stories. Thankfully, I didn't need to add another one!

| I had one chase me last Tuesday. He wasn't too big but he came out of the woods unexpectantly so it got the old ticker pumping faster needless to say.

| Call the Calvert County Sheriff at 410.535.2800 and ask to speak to an animal control officer. They are there 8:30 - 4:30, Monday - Friday. You can fill out a form at the sheriff's office anytime to start the process for a citation with $50 fine. Very helpful officers... just talked with them yesterday.

Two words: Pepper Spray, and like Amy said : Animal Control. Although the BIG dog that has charged me multiple times actually stopped right at the curb on the shoulder so "technically did not leave the owner's property" and animal control gave me the impression I couldn't do much unless the dog left the yard. However, if the owner hasn't called the dog last minute I believe he would! So I carry a tiny pepper spray on my waistband of my shorts...just in case. The owner is a real winner too! One time I had to stop running (since dogs love to chase) and I yelled at the dog: "NO! Bad Dog!!" and the owner told me to be quiet, and not in a very pleasant way, so maybe the pepper spray is for more than dogs/animals.....you know Just In Case.

I didn't report the dog that bit me. Luckily I was in pants and I ended up with just a bruise. If I had been in shorts, I think the bite would have broken skin.
I also have problems with people walking dogs. I used to try and let them know I was coming up from behind them, but that usually just startles them more. I know cyclist have the same issues. Now I just try and adjust my path around them.
I did have a father and daughter walking their dogs one time and their dogs pull themselves free. The dogs jumped all over me, but the dad never asked if I was okay. He was more worried about his daughter. Oh well.
There is one lady who does have her dog sit when I run by. She's always very polite and I appreciate that!

Maybe I'm a noisier runner, or maybe I've only encountered dog walkers with good hearing and no headphones, as they always seem to hear me coming up. So far I've encountered mostly polite dog walkers, who pull their dogs to heel when a runner comes by. One guy even stepped off one of our paths through trees into the woods part pulling his two (fairly large) dogs with him -- twice actually, as I returned down the path and came by him again.
I would very much like to keep having luck with only encountering well-mannered dog walkers. I've no interest at all in encountering those Jones Roads beasts, or in seeing the dogs near Amy come over the fence.
