12 X 800

Update the club on your individual training progress

12 X 800

Postby vic_runner on Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:22 am

I've heard that people do as much as 16x800 intervals when training for a marathon, and a month ago I made it up to 8x800. So this time I went to Prince Frederick (Chesapeake High Track) to see how far I could go, but 12 x 800 was the goal. It was humid around 6:30 when I started, and I felt a little tired starting out. After a mile warmup and two of the 800's I settled into a normal push for my two loop runs. After each I did a walking 200 cooldown. I did most at around 2:55, but went above 3 minutes for 3 of them by the time I hit the 10th. I pushed the last 2, getting a 2:54 and 2:52 to finish. My level of fatigue was higher than I've known in a long time, so I must have done them right. These longer intervals should help my long distance races, and next I might do smaller intervals to help on my shorter ones. It is weird to try and plan what to do when your thinking about running 5k to Marathon races and figuring out which ones to do next.
