3 Month Injury

Information about running-specific injuries and nutrition

3 Month Injury

Postby Amy M. on Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:05 pm

I was wondering if anyone knows of a sports doctor that could help me. It started with a small lump on my heel, which isn't too bad after a mile into running. Then, the pain progressed to the inside of my shin and finally to my calf. I've been icing, heating, wearing a compression sleeve, and now on my third week off from running. I've tried running on Jan. 1st, but that didn't start and end so great. So any advice on a doctor, I'd appreciate it.

Is the pain localized to a specific spot? Also does it hurt to hop on the leg? Could be a stress fracture. Requires a bone scan (not a normal x-ray) to properly diagnose.

The only good sports med guys I've dealt with are at Union Memorial in Baltimore.

The lump that is in my heel is painful until it's been warmed up. Along the inside of my shin is the worse, walking and going up and down steps hurts.

Thanks for a suggestion on where to go.

Sometimes a very localized injury is tendonitis. I thought I had a stress fracture last year and it was tendonitis, they feel very similar to me. I'm not a dr (I don't even play one on TV), and I've never been to a sports specific doctor, but Dr. Spatz in Prince Frederick is a very good orthopedist. Plus she's a runner so can give you a realistic answer on when you'll be ok to run again, and be sympathetic, which is always nice. :) I've also been to the other doctor in her practice, Dr. Rozran, who I liked, but several people I know don't much care for his demeanor. He's also an athlete and was sympathetic, realistic, etc., when I saw him several years ago.
Good luck!

Amy M., you were writing your post while I was writing mine! My tendonitis and stress fractures didn't feel like that, both were very localized and hurt more when I put pressure on them, running, walkig, etc.

Thanks!
I am bummed since I can't run. I thought it would have gone away by now... So thanks for your help with a doctor.
