Hill Training Suggestions

Postby Sue on Thu Dec 04, 2008 10:27 am

Does anyone have any ideas, tips, recommendations or suggestions to tackling these hills? If so, I welcome them. I'm reading everything I can from books to online info. to get some insight and helpful information on the topic. It's just that around here we don't have any big hills. I plan on working up to doing lots of hill repeats on the biggest hills I can find (especially at Calvert Cliffs State Park). Are there any other hilly trails around here? (I prefer to not have to drive very far, but would consider it)

Here is the elevation link of what I hope to accomplish: http://www.hatrun.com/Profile.jpg

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom. :)

The only hills I've used are over here in St Mary's -- Gunston Drive in Town Creek and Rue Purchase Rd a little south of San Souci. But they're not as steep as those ones in Calvert Cliffs anyway.

There are some decent hills on Mill Bridge Road, but there is no shoulder and you should really run with someone there.

I looked that up on google maps, and it seems not far from Calvert Cliffs. A nice club hill run from Mill Bridge to Calvert Cliffs might be nice some weekend?

I actually have a loop that includes Mill Bridge that we run sometimes. And by "we," I mean those who actually show up for a Sunday run.

I'm not sure how this relates to hill workouts...

Thanks! I'd like to check out Mill bridge road sometime. I have 15 weeks. I'm thinking definitely doing hill repeats in the St. Park starting at 4-5 up/downs then increasing the number of repeats each week and do this workout maybe once per week...? Or everyother week? Thoughts..?

Rt. 4 has a few longer rolling hills, but I don't want to run the highway (this training cycle) and definitely not for hill repeats, but a side road with less traffic might work. So maybe we can have a run on that loop sometime in the not too distant future.

Society Hill in Breton Bay. (by the golf course)

I really haven't seen hills in this area that match those in Harford County.

This morning when we returned from Myrtle Point, we discovered that coming out of Myrtle Pt up to rt 4, and then (away from the bridge) up to where rt 4 hits rt 235, is lots of uphill.

Myrtle Pt itself has twisty trails with some up & down, plenty of roots, and some really lovely views over the water. It also has some flat grassy parts.

You could park down by Myrtle Point and run towards 4. The hill there should be what you are looking for Sue.
