Tendonitis in Hip

Postby Sue on Thu Jul 17, 2008 8:32 am

Ok, this may be more whinning than some like and if so stop reading now. So, I went to the Dr. due to this on and off pain I have had in my right hip since my marathon in March. The pain is sharp and intense in my hip area and walking does not help much it still hurts like heck. The odd thing is it only ever comes on after 9-10 miles (during that last marathon it didn't bother me until around mile 15 or 16-ish). When the pain strikes I can still run but have to slow down and stretching does little to alleviate it. So I was worried it might be an IT band thing. But the Dr. said it was tendonitits and I can keep running. YEAH! (Because Baltimore is only 12 weeks away). He suggested LOTS of stretching and to try pre-medicating myself with...Ibuprofen before my long runs and if it doesn't get better or if it gets worse come back. So I leave the office and suddenly I feel like I have worries again! I completely forgot to ask him if this is something that will go away eventually  . (I'll probably call the office and ask). But anyway if anyone here has had a similar experiense due to any injury and would like to share their experience and wisdom or inspiration for getting through an injury I'd love to hear about it. This is very frustrating to me because I have never had an issue before (in a few half & my first 2 fulls I had no issues whatsoever) and I really hope to train harder this summer for my fall marathon and now I'm worried this tendonitis will slow me down and keep me from my goal in Oct. **whine** And I'm also worried about upcoming 18-20 milers yet to be run. I'll find out this weekend on my first pre-medicated long run I guess . Thanks for allowing me to vent here :). Sue

So, after continuing to have pain during the long runs...I returned to the Dr. to discuss the hip pain again. My treatment plan: continue to stretch ALOT. So I stretch everyday whether I run or not. I've also been rolling things out on a foam roller. The dr. said it is not ITBS (yeah). He said to expect little bits of improvement (ok). Most importantly he said I can still run and do my marathon training....(Baltimore is only 10 weeks away!) We also discussed the running surface which is mostly the shoulder of the road which slopes and constant running on it may be aggravating the hip...so I now do some running on the "wrong side" of the road (you know not facing traffic) with caution of course.
Well, yesterday (8-3) I went for my long run of almost 17 miles. I was prepared for the pain which has occurred on virtually all runs close to 10 miles or longer. But for this run: NO PAIN! The whole run went well! No hip issue at all! And I ran some rolling hills out on Route 4! Yippie! Woo-Hoo!! So I am now cautiously optimistic and will be sticking to the plan.
I hope everyone else's training is going strong and healthy! :D

Curious about the pre-run dosage of IB he is recommending?

He (my Dr.) told me in addition to the other things, to try pre-medicating myself with motrin before long runs. I have been taking the usual dosage of 2 tablets of ibuprofen (400mg total) first thing in the morning with my half bagel before the run and so far no stomach issues. The first 2 or 3 runs with ibuprofen I still had the pain, but not yesterday.

Sue,
Well, I'm self-diagnosing here, but I think I now have hip tendonitis. My hip has been bothering me on and off for over a month now. It slightly hurt at the beginning of the Army Ten Miler, but the past few days it has gotten worse. I had a decent run last night, but seem to be paying for it today. I did a little reading and what your doctor prescribed sounds like the normal treatment for hip tendonitis. I have an appointment next week, but until then I will follow what has been suggested. Has yours bothered you any more?

It has gotten progressively better. I have forgotten to take ibuprofen for several runs and been OK. After finishing the Annapolis 10 miler my hip felt tight and achey, and again I didn't take the ibuprofen. On my last 21+ miler a few weeks ago I took the medicine, but around mile 13 or 14 I felt some subtle hip ache, but then it faded during the run and I had no lingering hip pain. (The ice bath is a wonderful thing too) I still stretch and roll alot. I hope to have no issues with it this Saturday. Good luck and hope it feels better soon.

Has the ibuprofen caused any ill-effects with your stomach while out on your run if you take it before you run?

Fortunately, No. My stomach has had no problem. Of course I ate a bagel prior to taking the ibuprofen so my stomach wasn't empty. I have read conflicting reports of taking ibuprofen and running, but I am following a Dr.'s orders and I only take it for the long runs (over 10 miles) and who knows, after the marathon and recovery period I may try long runs without ibuprofen. I plan to continue stretching and using the foam roller no matter as it seems to really make a difference to me. And I am looking forward to a few very easy weeks after the race. :D
