Oak Ridge 3M Trail Run, SAT APR 11

Postby Perry2 on Sat Apr 11, 2009 1:57 pm

Wet, muddy, hilly, rainy, and windy -- and it even had a stream crossing -- small enough I could jump it, which is the way I like it. What's not to like?

But was that really a 3M course -- curious what others think?

Only negative -- well, besides that it was chilly as the rain got heavier later during the warmdown run, esp after the group one -- was that I missed most of the food (not sure what there was, but I heard there were cookies) b/c I was foolishly out doing the warmdown runs, instead of what I might have done if I'd though of it -- go pig out on the food while everyone else went out to do warmdown. :)

Happily for me, Jeff L. had pity on me and tossed me a bag of trail mix while he was busy loading cones and trying to head out.

Are you trying to start something Perry? The course may or may not have been slightly short, but it's not certified nor is it a race.

There were cookies, trail mix, and grapes. I thought I was getting another table from Suzanne Edgar to set food up on, but I didn't realize she was going to the other race this morning.

I will set food aside for you at Greenwell. How about that? :)

Oh, and if you run Hospice, run the 5K. Us 10Kers end up with scraps from the 5K runners.

 I loved the course. "Hilly"??! :P oh you mean those little bumps? just kidding. And the steam was perfect because you could just jump over it. Seriously though I had a very nice run. Thanks to all of those involved with putting these trail runs together.

I'd be happy if that was 3M, but I thought we slowed down more than that would mean.

Did we run the course SMAC uses?

Since I'm just cheering you up and getting you in a good mood (I knew you said it was SMAC, but I didn't know if we did it exactly), next question:

I don't understand why SMAC uses 3mi courses -- I thought all HS cross-country was 5K. When do they do 5K, and when do they do 3M? Patuxent course is 5K right?

For CC, it doesn't have to be a 5K course. We discussed this during course set-up. 8)

I'm not sure of the exact rule (check with Blaine), but I believe they are allowed to be slightly under 3 miles to a 5K. Patuxent is a 5K, but several of the other local schools are not.

Sorry Perry. I saw you coming in as we were driving out and would have given you the few remaining cookies, but they were with George, who had just headed out separately in my brother's car. Next time, break your recovery run up with a mid-run snack. I think everyone held out as long as they could in the downpour.

Actually it's pretty amazing they held out as long as they did -- it was getting heavier all the time.
