My first MCM training long run this morn

Postby Perry2 on Sat Jul 05, 2008 8:17 am

MCM training first long run for me this morning.
13.69mi in 1:46:51, which is an avg of 7:48.3
tired and feet are sore

I used the training plan calculator on www.runnersworld.com
I put in 19:39 on 5K, train for Marathon, 16weeks, long run Sat, moderate,
and it said I should go long for 14mi today at 8:08 pace

Got a shake at Roy Rogers on Solomon's right after -- they
stick scoops of ice cream into the cup to make it -- I didn't know
that -- makes a very cold shake, I had to drink then stop when
my mouth got too cold, then start again, etc.

Never saw the Sat morning Solomon's running crew -- not sure why they weren't there...

I've been doing most of my running in the afternoon and evening, in 80s, so it felt almost cold to me running in mid-70s at 0600. Got a light rain by the end.

Perry,
When Cathy and I ran Friday morning around Solomon's Island, there was a group of four runners and a cyclist starting just after us. I don't know any of the faces for the MCM training group, but just thought I'd mention this.

Interesting, maybe they can't read the calendar (or more likely shifted days on purpose for the holiday) -- thanks Sierra.

BTW, Fri morn PaxVelo did the Bridge-to-Bridge ride again, so at 0600 they gathered at Patuxent Adventure Center, rode around the island, and then up and over the bridge to St Mary's -- did you see a 24-person bicycle group going over the Solomon's Bridge? Might have been just a bit too early for you to see them.

At that pace Perry your going to blow away your projected time for the marathon. I did 10.5 miles myself today but at a much slower pace than what you did.

Scott, the plan I generated gave these mileages:

JUL 05 - 41mi - 14mi @ 8:08
JUL 12 - 43mi - 16mi @ 8:08
JUL 19 - 45mi - 18mi @ 8:08
JUL 26 - 36mi - 7mi @ 8:08
AUG 02 - 47mi - 20mi @ 8:08
AUG 09 - 49mi - 16mi @ 8:03
AUG 16 - 51mi - 20mi @ 8:03
AUG 23 - 40mi - 8mi @ 8:03
AUG 30 - 53mi - 16mi @ 7:58
SEP 06 - 55mi -20mi @ 7:58
SEP 13 - 57mi - 16mi @ 7:58
SEP 20 - 45mi - 9mi @ 7:58
SEP 27 - 59mi - 20mi @ 7:53
OCT 04 - 46mi -12mi @ 7:53
OCT 11 - 31mi - 8mi @ 7:53
OCT 18 - 40mi - marathon race day

Did yours give the same long run distance (second mileage column on each line), but probably with slightly different weekly totals at first and slightly different paces?

That is, long distances:
14, 16, 18, 7,
20, 16, 20, 8,
16, 20, 16, 9
20, 12, 8, (marathon race day)

Yes very similar, alittle shorter at first and about a min slower pace.

I'm not sure what your projected marathon pace is, but you should consider running either the end 1/3 or some complete long runs at that marathon pace. Think about training your body to go forever at a pace that is comfortable at first and something you can settle into when your tired. For race day I usually advise people that I know how its good to go at a predetermined and comfortable pace early on, but haven't actually done it myself lately.

All the runs on that generated training schedule are below my projected marathon pace :) If I can get through the long runs at below 8min/mi, then I'll actually try to run the marathon at below 8min/mi -- my projected pace was more like 9min/mi.

Managed 17 last Sat

Postby Perry2 on Mon Aug 04, 2008 7:20 pm

I got the email that the Solomon's Sat crew was going for 17mi this past Sat at 0600 at Solomon's. I didn't go to sleep early enough and didn't get up for it. But I was inspired and went out midday to do 18mi. After about 10mi, inspiration ran into fatigue, and I got slower and tireder as the miles rolled by (oh so slowly). Crystal came out and cycled with me -- or doing fast loops through whichever neighborhood I was in -- for the last bit, and tried to encourage me, but I was tired and grumpy and didn't want to hear it. I managed to eke out 17mi. I was very happy with that, after I stopped. 17 is a great number, esp as I was considering stopping from about 10 onward :)

Next Sunday they're going for 20, I heard, but I definitely can't make that one -- perhaps I'll be inspired to try 20 on my own. Or perhaps I'll wait another week for it.
