I've been only sporadically swimming and biking, but I've done some swims followed by runs, and most of the few bikes I've done were followed by runs, and I feel nice and warmed up going straight into a run, I've found. Even the at the tri-club duathlon, I felt good going into the final run after the middle bike. So I've not experienced the "rubbery legs" syndrome that I've heard people talk about, going into a run after a bike.
But today I did kayak (45min, 3.2mi -- about as fast as I can go) followed by bike (40min, 15.1mph -- about as fast as I can go) followed by run (5mi avg 7:30pace), and the bike->run transition felt a little weird to me.
Going into the run I felt sluggish, but was surprised to see I was running at about a 7:30 pace -- it felt like 9+ min pace, as it really seemed that my legs were moving slower than usual and I must be taking fewer steps per minute than normal. So it was very surprising to me to find myself going at 7:30, which normally feels pretty fast to me, not slow at all. I don't know why I was going along at that relatively quick clip but feeling very sluggish -- not sure if there was some illusion of slowness or what was going on there.
However, by the fifth mile, I was fatigued, and felt a little sick -- like the feeling of going to vomit, although I knew I wasn't -- and that also doesn't normally happen to me even in races.
Maybe the sunburn I got two days ago was contributing, and I was probably somewhat dehydrated -- I had taken a water bottle on the kayak, but had never stopped to drink it, so I only had water when switching from kayak to bike.
