Deer Fly Report from Calvert Cliffs State Park

Postby Sue on Fri Jun 12, 2009 8:58 am

As I have been running almost all my weekday runs at Calvert Cliffs, I just thought I'd share my Deer Fly Report with anyone here. They are out, the little heathens are relentless and I don't know how many more runs I'll be doing there over the summer. Probably not many...if any. The Deep Woods OFF seemed to help a tiny bit, but I still got bitten 2-3 times and I had to reapply because I sweat so much, that alot got washed away. At least I got to see numerous deer and one had a little fawn with her during my last run there (Thurs) so that was neat, but man am I going to miss running in the woods. :(

Was there this morning and the deer flies were kinda ruthless. Still nice to be in the woods and on the trails, though. Hardly a bug at the beach, making for a nice mid-run break from the buzzing and biting.

If it's any consolation, there were no (zero) deerflies on the Broadneck track this morning, but also no shade either. Bet you had more shade :)

There were no deer flies on my run over the weekend. In Ocean City. :P Very scenic, in a touristy sort of way. Pancake flat, crushed clam shell path, with short sections along the water. It was extremely humid at 6am...felt like I was swimming through the air.

And today I go up to the park, thinking a rain shower might keep the flies away. Well being later in the morning, the clouds parted and the sun came out making it very, very steamy. I had to get myself a little tree branch to wave around my face/head...and still got bit 2-3 times and killed 2. I have to say it was a great little trail run though, and a little faster too (thanks to the flies <-- ).

Ha! I use that tree branch trick sometimes, but to wave the spiderwebs out from in front of me as I'm running. It's great fun, and makes me feel like the scene in Shrek where he's doing that while walking with Donkey and Fiona. I'll have to try it for the flying bug repellent capabilities next time. Thx for the tip.

BTW, my running partner on Friday proclaimed us the witches of Calvert Cliffs as I was using what I'll now call the stick trick in the park. ;)

I bet the bugs would be less of a problem if you flew higher on your broomsticks.

I did not know deer flies still attack when it's raining. Yesterday I had the chance to go for a mid-day run, so I headed up to the park in the rain to run the service road (out & back twice). It was raining nice and steady so it felt pretty refreshing after the hot, humid, steamy runs lately. I was over half way to the beach when a fly buzzed me and eventually I got bitten. So even if it's raining, beware...they still will try and attack. The positive side of this story is that it was only 1 or 2 flies at a time and not a whole swarm like the early morning runs, so I think the rain helped keep them back a bit. :D
